BlockBeats news, July 8, in the past week, at least three Coinbase users and one cryptocurrency user have been targeted by scammers posing as Coinbase, and one victim was defrauded of $1.7 million.
Node co-founder Tegan Kline shared an explanation from a "good friend" on July 7, whose wallet was stolen for $1.7 million the day before because a scammer tricked them into sharing part of the mnemonic phrase. The victim said that the scammer called and claimed to be the security team of Coinbase, and sent the victim an email that appeared to be from Coinbase, confirming that the victim was "talking to an official representative of Coinbase."
The scammer claimed that the victim's wallet was "directly connected to the blockchain," causing the transaction to flow out of the wallet. Then, the scammer sent another email that appeared to be from Coinbase, showing an outgoing transaction.
The scammers directed the victims to a website and asked them to enter a mnemonic phrase to stop the transaction. The victims knew that this was "unsafe", but they still entered a "partial" phrase but did not submit it. A few hours later, the victim's wallet was stolen from $1.7 million in crypto assets.
