BlockBeats News, February 14th, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published the latest article "The Reason to Increase L1 Gas Limit Even in an L2-Dominated Ethereum". The article stated that the recent L1 Gas limit has been raised from 30 million to 36 million, a 20% capacity increase. Many support a further significant increase in the short term. The security of this expansion benefits from recent and upcoming technical improvements: Ethereum client efficiency improvements, EIP-4444 reducing historical data storage requirements (see roadmap), and future stateless clients.
However, before moving forward, we need to consider: Is it wise to permanently increase the L1 Gas limit in a roadmap centered around Rollups? We do not want to end up facing centralization risks from high L1 usage without truly knowing how we will benefit from it. This article will argue that even in a world where the majority of usage and applications are on L2, significantly expanding L1 still holds value because it enables a simpler and more secure application development pattern.
