California Governor Seeks Tariff Exemption for California in Trump Trade War

2025-04-05 19:02

BlockBeats News, April 5th, according to Axios report, California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Friday that he is in talks with other countries to ensure California is exempt from retaliatory tariffs in the ongoing escalating trade war under Trump.

Newsom, seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 U.S. presidency, is seeking to shield California from the negative impacts of the trade war.

"Donald Trump's tariffs do not represent all Americans. I have instructed the California government to seek out new opportunities for expanding trade and remind our global trading partners that California remains a stable partner," Newsom said in a video released on Friday.

He referred to California as the "bedrock of the American economy" and emphasized California's commitment to maintaining a "stable trade relationship" with the world.

Newsom tweeted on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that California is "ready to engage with global trading partners." He also stated that California is not afraid to leverage its market influence "to push back against the largest tax hike our generation has ever faced."
