BlockBeats News, April 24th, according to CNN's report, Musk made two very interesting and contradictory statements regarding his role in the government during Tesla's earnings call. First, Musk hinted that he would soon end his current "temporary" role, and starting in May, his time allocated to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would be significantly reduced. However, Musk then stated that he would not completely withdraw from government affairs, and might even stay until the end of President Trump's term in 2029. Musk said, "I think I have to continue to do this until the end of the presidency to make sure the waste and fraud we stopped doesn't come back, if there's an opportunity for it to come back. I think I will continue to spend one or two days a week handling government affairs, as long as the President wants me to and as long as it's useful."
Musk's current role in the government is already on the edge of what Washington law allows. The White House has called him a "special government employee," but according to Public Service Partner Organization CEO Max Stier, granting Musk broad powers to manage DOGE, fire employees, and reduce federal agencies was a misapplication of the "Special Government Employee Act" from the beginning. The Trump administration abused this mechanism by hiring Musk and others to circumvent restrictions such as conflicts of interest, security clearances, which should have been followed by formal full-time employees.
